Sucker for Secondhand

Hi, I’m Lindsay. I love the thrill of thrifting and finding secondhand clothing that speak to me and my budget. I am someone who doesn’t love standard retail clothes shopping. Growing up as a millennial, shopping meant driving to the mall, giving into the smell of Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, combating the constant perfume and digging for petite jeans. Later as an adult I realized I don’t need new with tags. Secondhand was just as good, if not better quality, especially for jeans that were already broken in and so so soft, and a much better budget alternative. Not all thrifting is less expensive. There are plenty of pricey vintage and thrift stores around. Discovering the thredUp app, which allows customers to thrift shop online with major discounts and an impressive search filter, completely changed my perception and hope for shopping.

When searching for jeans, thredUp allows customers to filter by brand, size, pant cut, jean wash, rise and inseam! I had found the Holy Grail of petite jean shopping. This was amazing, groundbreaking. Most, if not all jeans I have ordered from thredUp have fit and are now in my closet.

Thredup also takes donated clothes “clean out” bags from your own closet, which I have also done. For each item accepted, the donor sets the price for each item. That is why you may see duplicate, similar items for varying prices. A good thing to keep in mind when trying to find the best deal. Unlike secondhand sites like Poshmark and Ebay, thredUp doesn’t provide price negotiation between buyer and seller. This isn’t too much of a loss, since thredUp frequently has numerous promo codes available for additional savings. Still a win-win.
